AROC Adventure Race - Canberra - 2007-02-24

After doing the BC AROC Evening Race on December 1st last year I was unable to do the following race in Tharwa so had been looking forward to doing another. I teamed up with Bruce again for this race and got Ron on board too.

The course was really interesting, Tom and Al set the entire course on one a4 sheet in area (1:25000) with more detailed maps of areas for the rogaine legs. The course was tougher than the BC race and I hear it was tougher than the Tharwa race too. In the end we missed the cut off for the bonus legs by 2 minutes but at this point we were slow and I had made a few navigation mistakes that lost us time too. We were not too upset to miss out on the bonus legs and on the whole had a great day out racing.

Danielle getting ready for her start. Three teams of three women were in the top 6 at the end of the race, one of those three teams was her team.

Adrian, Mark and Alex getting ready to race in the Acumen colours, they were unusually in the mens category as Selina is overseas at the moment, they ended up finishing 2nd overall.

Steve, Joe and Bec raced together to finish third in the Premier Mixed category, we managed to hold them off by 2 minutes at the end of the final leg.

Bec again with my two teammates Ron and Bruce.

Tom giving us a pre race brieing, probably getting to the point of Al trying to get him to hurry up and stop telling stories so we can start the race around the right time.

A whole lot of teams about to hop on their boats for the water start to the race.

Ron right in front of me as we run through Canberra Uni, Bruce is just above the woman in the 143 jersey.

Oops, I probably should not show this photo, this is one of my nav errors thinking it would be faster to ride over the saddle to get to the next TA than to ride around the powerlines. Though we were made slower by Ron's daughter Jess calling his phone so many times he thought it could be an emergency and had to answer it (it was unimportant).

Later on in the race we were doing the final bike section and could see some of the teams behind us doing the Kayak we had just finished.

Bruce running along very comfortably.

Ron not looking quite so comfortable on this final run leg.

Our team just after the finish, Steve, Bruce, Ron. Team: Not A Pretty Girl.

Joe, Bec and Steve who we just managed to stay in front of at the end.

A few more teams beginning to arrive.

I thought it looked pretty cool seeing all the Kayaks starting to paddle across the lake.

fullsize
Sarah, her work colleague and Ian who was a last minute (6am that morning) ring in for another work colleague who was to sick to race.

Alex after a good race to finishi in 2nd place over all.
