Baldylocks at the 2010 Coast 2 Kosci Ultra Marathon

A little while ago David sent an email out asking for support crew for the Coast 2 Kosci Ultra Marathon. Though he was over in NZ competing in the World Rogaine champs with Julie and then on holiday until the weekend before this event he had decided it was the year to do the race.

A few of the ACTRun crew had been involved (competitors, support crew, volunteers) for the past few years and obviously the sheer epic quality of the race and their positive reports had inspired David enough that he wanted to compete. 240km of running from a beach near Eden on the south NSW coast to the summit of Mt Mosciusko and back down to Charlotte Pass for the finish.

I can gladly say Dave finished in 33h10m and 5th place overall. More details are on the race website Coast 2 Kosci. I was impressed with Dave's incredible achievement and throughout the event his absolute dedication to moving forward and reaching the finish line. Way to go Baldylocks.

fullsize
The inside of 40 Cafe in Nimmitabel, a shrine to U2 if ever there was one.

fullsize
However we were keen to try out the Funky Pies, Vegan pies that were awesome.

fullsize
Even the menus had a U2 theme.

fullsize
Zoe was there to support Tall Geoff.

fullsize
David at the race briefing.

fullsize
David almost ready for bed after preparing food and kit.

fullsize
Shoes and kit bags ready to go.

fullsize
A fridge full of a lot of supplies.

Dave with Chris, the other support crew member.

fullsize
Dave and I.

fullsize
All the runners lining up for the start photo.

fullsize
Ready to go

fullsize
And they are off, Jo and Sharon the eventual winners closest to camera.

fullsize
39 people about to punish themselves.

fullsize
Race banner now lonely on the beach.

fullsize
For the first 24km along Towamba Rd we passed runners but had to wait until 24kmk to stop and begin supporting them. There were aid stations set up for this section.

fullsize
I took some photos as we drove along.

fullsize
Finally with Dave after the aid station and he is running pretty strongly.

fullsize
He said he was in a happy place settling into the race.

fullsize
This is Nigel who was putting in a strong performance early on.

fullsize
Jo Blake was out in front for the entire race, Dave and Nigel battled for 2nd for a while early on.

fullsize
Running up a hill

fullsize
Slowing briefly for a drink.

fullsize
Chris busy writing what Dave is drinking, eating and any other notes for the entire event. I am sure this is a list Gramps would love to get hold of due to the level of detail here, though I suspect Julie will ensure it stays out of his wily hands.

fullsize
More hills

fullsize
Nigel and a support crew member.

fullsize
Dave passing Nigel's support crew.

fullsize
Chris running along with David, zoomed out to show the lush views along this country.

fullsize
Lots of water in creeks and streams.

fullsize
On bitumen almost for the first time in the race. We went up the road around 10 minutes to find Jo Blake running along. Stopped here to wait for Baldy.

fullsize
Here comes Baldy and Chris.

fullsize
Keeping the food intake going.

fullsize
Back on dirt

fullsize
Now running through some of the more lovely parts of the Towamba river valley.

fullsize
Looking upstream.

fullsize
Now back to the race. I started my mission to keep Baldy entertained with fancy dress.

fullsize
I had worn a santa hat for a while earlier and he said thanks Santa so it was time for more variety.

fullsize
Chris or I constantly were trying to ensure he ate and drank lots.

fullsize
Dave was wearing a camelback filled with around 1L of water at a time.

fullsize
Everything else we handed him at regular intervals.

fullsize
More sports drink.

fullsize
Chris running along for a while again.

fullsize
Coming up to the river ford at the official marathon point (which is actually a few km past 42.2 km into the race)

fullsize
The other support crew said they had never seen water running across this before.

fullsize
Dave heading up the road still holding 2nd place.

fullsize
I almost expected to find some snazzy 21st century glass tower here, I was however dissapointed.

fullsize
Though the bridge that was here instead is pretty spectacular.

fullsize
And crosses the river which is also pretty.

fullsize
And here is Dave running past it all.

fullsize
At David's bucks party he was encouraged to wear the black dress (I am using as a cape here) and the viking helmet out to dinner, so I got hold if it to bring some more grins to him.

fullsize
Of course it may have just made me look silly, the Portugal pink apron was a new touch courtesy of Aaron's housemates.

fullsize
We were about to hit the first checkpoint at Rocky Hall

fullsize
Dave was still runnning awefully fast, he had passed his first marathon split in under 4 hours.

fullsize
Paul the race director and volunteer Michelle.

fullsize
Rocky Hall phone booth for the check in.

fullsize
Dave passing the underwear fence

fullsize
Quickly followed by the field of mannequins

fullsize
Dave running past the mannequins

fullsize
Pretty strange stuff to be found out in the middle of nowhere.

fullsize
The last bit of downhill before a big climb.

fullsize
The Towamba River crossing

fullsize
Down the hill to the Towamba River crossing.

fullsize
Starting his climb up Big Jack Mountain.

fullsize
This is quite a climb

fullsize
However it was lovely scenery and Dave said he was enjoying it a lot.

fullsize
Long view

fullsize
Closer

fullsize
A small waterfall gully

fullsize
Chris with Dave as he comes over the top of the Big Jack Mountain climb.

fullsize
Changing shires.

fullsize
And now out toward the open Monaro Plains

fullsize
Onto bitumen again as we head toward Cathcart.

fullsize
Nigel coming on to Mt Darrah Rd too.

fullsize
He still looked fairly comfortable here.

fullsize
Unfortunately for him he started to hurt and lose time not too long after this.

fullsize
Nigel's support crew were still near by for a while.

fullsize
As can be seen here not long before the 100km mark.

fullsize
Back on the dirt for a while now.

fullsize
It was rather hot and sunny out here so we were filling David's hat with ice and handing him bottles of iced water to cool off with often.

fullsize
I tried another outfit change here.

fullsize
Chris seemed to find them entertaining.

fullsize
Big open vistas on the plains.

fullsize
Running down toward David to hand him drinks.

fullsize
More views around the plains.

fullsize
Running up the hill with Baldy as we passed 100 km on the GPS.

fullsize
Dave was still running along very comfortably here

fullsize
He had stopped and popped a blister around 20km earlier and would soon do another one.

fullsize
Here we are at the dead tree at 102km that all C2K runners know about.

fullsize
Chris running down to Dave

fullsize
And now running past the tree. Dave did his first 100km in around 11 hours which was moving pretty fast.

fullsize
Nigel running to the tree

fullsize
And walking past his support crew.

fullsize
Dave coming up on some cows.

fullsize
The cows were not supposed to be on the roads, however a fence had gone down somewhere.

fullsize
Julie appeared to join in the support and was bearing pizza.

fullsize
Nigel passing as we sort out how to operate with Julie along for the ride too.

fullsize
Julie joined in the running to keep Dave motivated and ran most of the rest of the race with him (she did around 90 km of running in the end)

fullsize
Chris and I did a car drop at Dalgetty and I thought the sheep on the corner in the main street was unusual enough to warrant a photo.

fullsize
Jo Blake and supprt crew around 10km up the road from David.

fullsize
David finally walking the odd hill or two.

fullsize
Though I am sure Julie helped keep him going most of the time.

fullsize
Getting later in the day he was still moving well.

fullsize
I thought it was time for another outfit.

fullsize
Julie and Dave enjoying a run together as they do so often.

fullsize
Making sure Dave eats more.

fullsize
Though he kept moving at all times only stopping for blister popping and some clothes changes and toilet moments.

fullsize
Camelback refills happened whenever he drank it dry.

fullsize

fullsize
I liked this image as it showed the view we had as support crew fairly often.

fullsize
Running on into dusk.

fullsize
Still on the Monaro plains, it is not until after Dalgetty that they are left behind

fullsize
Just on dark

fullsize
The reflective vests really do work well.

fullsize
Dave running into the night

fullsize
Usually accompanied by Julie

fullsize
Food and clothes at Dalgetty

fullsize
Julie probably suggested the photo of the frog.

fullsize
I left for 2 hours sleep in Jindabyne so handed the camera to Chris.

fullsize
This and the next few photos probably need a NSFW tag or some sort of warning.

fullsize
Puffy lamented the fact that when he and Velkro supported Flyer in 2007 there was no Nudity. Baldy even noticed there was a full moon out.

fullsize
He was rather intent on fixing that this time around when he came to visit Baldy. So intent was he that he lost his glasses in his haste to remove his kit. I hope he found them again.

fullsize
Andrew Vize managed to pass David just before Jindabyne

fullsize
Here are Andrew and his crew passing thredbo river.

fullsize
Dawn on the way up toward sawpit.

fullsize
A rather lovely looking morening, though cold and windy.

fullsize
Here is Gordi and his crew a little while before catching David.

fullsize
I did go for a few more outfits through the morning, however Chris was off getting some sleep so they will have to live on in Baldy and Julie's memories.

fullsize
Julie and David near wilsons valley.

fullsize
And now we can see Gordi and crew in the background.

fullsize
David was hurting a lot now and had slowed a lot too.

fullsize
Still he was on a mission and was absolutely going to finish no matter what happened.

fullsize
Gordi's crew running ahead with orders of food. Dave and Julie are blurry about to pass the guthega turn off.

fullsize
Up the hill toward Smiggins.

fullsize
Still moving forward focused on the finish.

fullsize
He was still getting into a shuffle a bit despite the cold and pain. I think maybe we should have fed him somre more pain killers.

fullsize
We did not realise until the descent off Kosci how sore his feet were which could possibly have been dealt with a bit.

fullsize
He was however still making himself go forward as fast as he could and keping a strong consistent pace.

fullsize
Here is Sharon just after passing through Perisher Valley.

fullsize
Chris, Julie and David on the plain after Eyre T-Bar.

fullsize
Sharon with her support crew moving at a fast walk.

fullsize
The lovely view down to the windy creek in the plain below Charlotte Pass.

fullsize
Sharon passing David.

fullsize
All of us heading out of Charlotte Pass to go to the summit with David.

fullsize
Moving a bit slower than they normally do up this trail, however he has done a pretty impressive effort over the past 30 hours.

fullsize
The weather had become a little less pleasant here.

fullsize
Paul (on the bike) and Vince came up the trail with us for a while.

fullsize
Gordi on his way down.

fullsize
A strong performance from him as a first tim C2Ker.

fullsize
Some random walkers out on the trail.

fullsize
Sharon and her crew coming back down from the summit just before Rawsons Pass.

fullsize
A happy moment for them, on target for breaking the womens record.

fullsize
Dave as we are about to cross the snow drift.

fullsize
Drinking hot chocolate I had prepared for him.

fullsize
Julie and Dave at the summit.

fullsize
Team photo at the summit.

fullsize
Walking back down the path.

fullsize
Chris was rugged up in an interesting manner trying to protect his face from the cold.

fullsize
Danny Hooley and crew.

fullsize
Crossing the Snowy River.

fullsize
Darrel and team.

fullsize
3 km to the finish, Dave was getting a bit warm.

fullsize
Though I think we all were, however it was easier to finish before removing clothes.

fullsize
Kevin and his crew.

fullsize
I finally decided to hand the camera over to chris for a photo or two

fullsize
Largely because I could not believe I was running (however slowly) in so much clothing. Thermal top and leggings, windproof trousers and jacket.

fullsize
Almost finished though.

fullsize
And Dave was managing a reasonable sort of speed here all things considered. Impressive effort.

fullsize
Lisa and crew.

fullsize
Setting off for the last haul of the race.

fullsize
Nigel on the last leg.

fullsize
Running in to the CP finish.

fullsize
Woohoo all done, Way to go Dave.

fullsize
Congratulations from Julie.

fullsize
This is what a hard man like Dave's feet look like after that punishment.

fullsize
Many blisters needed to be fixed and lots of evidence of wear and tear. Also the swelling that became cankles is already evident.

fullsize
Dave getting a congratulations hug from Paul.

fullsize
Dave with his new Akubra

All the finishers of the 2010 C2K.
