Tuesday morning Cotter/Uriarra loop 2005-02-22

I was wondering what the photos would look like if I tried taking them from within the bunch during a road ride. I used a picturesque ride (around the Cotter Uriarra loop) and a a reasonably experienced bunch (mostly mountain bike riders or Vets members) and here are some of the results (the stuff that was not too blurred or strange).

1600x1200
The meet point at 06:00am at Deeks Reserve carpark, this is a half hour (14 KM) ride from my house already, at this time of year is is still dark.

1600x1200
Chris Nolan on the left and Patrick and some others ahead as we roll down toward Cotter.

1600x1200
Patrick from the side as we climb Mt Mcdonald

1600x1200
One of the Vets I do not know, this was my first attempt at holding the camera with it facing backwards to shoot people behind me.

1600x1200
Chris Nolan as we roll from Mt Mcdonald towards Uriarra Road. Patrick in CORC colours and Dave Moten in the blue Liberty Seguros jersey also.

1600x1200
As above, with Gary Scheld (in front of Chris) and James Gardner (right) also visible

1600x1200
Allan Bontjer has a few road bikes, this is his good one, the Scapin with full Campag Chorus.

1600x1200
Another attempt at holding the camera facing backward, still somewhat dark at this time with little help from the flash. Libby, Sue and Mikey visible in the line on the left, with Jaymz (grinning his head off) and some Vets guy I do not know on the right.

1600x1200
About to turn right onto Uriarra Road, same people as 3 photos above, the are red/pink with sunrise.

1600x1200
Often taking photos from a low point looking up makes an interesting impression (works well in mountain biking) so I thought I would try leaning down and holding the camera at pedal height.

1600x1200
Same idea facing backward.

1600x1200
Starting the climb up out of Uriarra Crossing on the first of the three sisters, the Uber climbers are lining up (the last we ever see of them until the top of the third sister), Chris Nolan, Dave Moten (the best climber out there today), James Gardner and Gary Scheld.

1600x1200
Allan was climbing fairly well today, he claimed he was taking it easy still, and he looks fairly comfortable here.

1600x1200
I stopped and took some photos as people rode past me, here Bruce, Patrick and Sue.

1600x1200
Libby.

1600x1200
Most of Mikey, a Vets rider named Pete, Paul Brodie and another Vets rider.

1600x1200
Mikey and Paul over the first sister, two more to go.

1600x1200
Mikey working on that breathing thing.

1600x1200
And he was carrying a heavy backpack and riding the touring bike, good Polaris training I am sure.

1600x1200
Another hold the camera low looking back shot, good expanse of sky in it.

1600x1200
Looking through my handlebar toward Mikey's bike.

1600x1200
Jaymz and Mikey about to summit the third sister.

1600x1200
Libby reaching the end of the harder climbing for the morning.

1600x1200
A shot of my handlebars and speedo as we were cruising along the bike path back towards ANU.

1600x1200
Sue, Bruce and a very obscured Allan.

1600x1200
Same people, trying for more of a side shot.

1600x1200
Another rear shot, this with Mikey half in frame.

1600x1200
Not really enough available light for this shot, I took it while were under a shadow.

1600x1200
Sue signaling an oncoming rider as we rode across Scrivner Dam, Dairy Farmers hill in the distance and the placid lake to our right.

1600x1200
Sue with a lot of sunshine over the lake as we crested the little hill after Scrivner Dam.

1600x1200
Sue and Allan with Black Mountain tower in the distance.

1600x1200
Another semi side on shot showing off the glorious morning as we ride down through yarramundi reach.
