2009 World Mountain Bike and Trials Championships in Canberra

It has finally happened, the 2009 World Mountain Bike and Trials Championships are finally on and happening in Canberra. I have two weeks off work to volunteer/work at the event. As the CORC President I have been involved with the preparations, planning and advising on technical details for this for a fairly long while now. (though the real Heros from the club are the likes of Dave McKinlay, Dave Morgan, Dave McCook, John Graydon, Jeff (Honorary Dave?) Hughes, Craig Peacock, Sarah O'Callaghan, Anthony Burton and others.

Anyway I started taking photos on Saturday 21st and will be adding to them when I get near a computer, this is the first week and a half of photos so far just now.

Monday afternoon September 7th and I have finished adding all the other photos I took out there to the page. Have not commented most of them though.

McCook's dog Tess who was helping us for the first few days.

fullsize
Dave and his Son Fergus.

fullsize
I thought this was interesting, seeing someone mountain biking with a child on a foraward mounted child seat.

fullsize
Dave using the hammer drill to put in course bunting poles.

Event village early on.

fullsize
Hammer drill, using power tools the work, a big drill.

Practicing the corner.

fullsize
Andy Bell showing how its done too.

fullsize
Ben again.

fullsize
Rowena getting the line right.

fullsize
Dylan Cooper looking on as Kate Potter works on the line. Dylan was the smoothest Australian team member through most of the sections I saw him on, as one would expect. Zoe King however did some damn smooth riding also.

fullsize
Zoe and the Australian Coach watching Dylan demonstrate Hammerhead.

fullsize
Second drop on hammerhead.

fullsize
Dylan still making it look easy.

fullsize
This morning we had put in the rock garden just before the Fang (Drop off, just before the Dual Slalom track into the feed zone) and wanted the Australian team to comment on how well that and the B line near it worked.

fullsize
We made the rock garden a little easier than it had been, and the B line slower. The B line was later extended further back though.

fullsize
Some Italians under the DH bridge.

fullsize
On the track after hammer head, more Italians.

fullsize
Up the top of the mountain building the dirt ramp at the bottom of the wooden start ramp Nathan unearthed a skink.

fullsize
Morgs and Nathan on top of the rock and Dirt pile we had just moulded into place.

fullsize
Morgs improving the ramp.

fullsize
Drilling holes in the ground near bluegums.

fullsize
Kiwi riders coming through the switchbacks while we were putting in poles, this is a lovely looking pink Ellsworth.

Kangaroos in the Feed zone, they are less likely to be hanging around once it is busy during races.

fullsize
Some random people out riding the course.

fullsize
Or possibly practising out of team colours.

More of the French.

fullsize

fullsize
Hope they enjoy the ride.

fullsize
Candaian friend Jen who is out here volunteering, we helped set up the managers meeting room in the old Cafe at the visitors centre on top of Stromlo. This was the only room large enough near the site for the meetings. (UCI said the press conference room was too close to the press for these meetings or somthing)

fullsize
Jen and a pair of Kangaroos.

fullsize
UCI Representative (Annalisa) near the Kangaroos.

fullsize
Canadians nearing the top of Cardiac Climb on Tuesday Sep 1 in practice.

fullsize
French transitioned first sending out a female rider for the final lap. They held on for third place.

fullsize
Jen is now part of the presentation team (a good use for good looking women)

fullsize
Melanie Louveau of the UCI back stage before prize ceremony.

fullsize
Geoff and Catherine of the Canadian team can be seen in this shot.

fullsize
Doing some stuff near the DH bridge I was able to take a few photos of riders practising the DH course from a distance.

Yet another way this event differs from other races we ever see here in Australia. Check out how many photographers were crowded at the finish to see the Mens Under 23 winner cross the line.
