2006 New Zealand, Dunedin, QC, Rotorua, Wellington

Michael Carden and I flew over to New Zealand for linux.conf.au 2006 followed by two weeks of mountain biking and tourist stuff and having a heap of fun. The trip included 2 days on the Queen Charlotte Track, a few days in Wellington, a while in Rotorua and surrounds with a 24 hour mtb race (the N-ZO sponsored N-Duro 24 Hour Race) thrown into the mix for the fun of it.

I have written a few diary entries about the race and subsequent mountain biking in Rotorua. Also Crash took something like 550 photos, as soon as he has them uploaded I will put a link to them here (and in my diary).

Riding up toward Swampy Summit in Dunedin with some locals, this shot looks back toward the airport area.

fullsize
Crash on the climb.

fullsize
At a different point, almost to the summit, stopping for a food break.

fullsize
I stopped for some food and a rest upon returning to the Octagon in the centre of town.

fullsize
Crash on the water taxi out from Picton to Punga Cove in QC Sound.

fullsize
Another wonderful QC view.

fullsize
Crash on a climb looking over to the head of Kenepuru sound.

fullsize
Crash with some local wild life.

fullsize
Wheeeeeeeee.

fullsize
The memorial on the road as we are about to descend into Portage Bay.

fullsize
Crash with his climbing legs on.

fullsize
Inspecting the brake pads to find the rear was metal on metal and the front was getting that way.

fullsize
After the switch back descent there is a fun bit through some forest.

fullsize
The final descent into Anakiwa is an absolute hoot.

fullsize
Heidi and Crash looking on as Lisa got into some proper carbo loading for the team with her Beer Hat.

fullsize
Crash checking out the chainring tree in Makara.

fullsize
Crash approaching the carpark at Makara as we run out of daylight.

fullsize
Heidi's brand new frame with the older bits hung off it, it sparkles in the sunlight rather nicely too.

fullsize
The next 4 shots are to show off Island Bay from the house we stayed at.

fullsize
See above.

fullsize
And again.

fullsize
It was a lovely sunny day finally so I took another shot out from the driveway.

fullsize
Heidi had a habit of putting her beers down half finished and forgetting where they were, so someone made her the beer stubby necklace to stop that bad habit of hers.

fullsize
Jim prepping for the 24 Hour race.

fullsize
Crash prepping.

fullsize
Lisa.

Heidi pondering tyre choice for the race.

The race start finish area.

fullsize
Me about to head out for the first lap.

fullsize
The bikes propped up and ready.

Jim about to head out for his first lap.

Jim handing over to Lisa.

Lisa on the move.

fullsize
Ricky prepping for another two laps.

fullsize
Heidi finishing a lap.

fullsize
Ricky and Gary were riding in mens pairs. They had a rather cool pair of boards they switched status on when they finished laps to say how they were going.

fullsize
I want to see a bunch of these at the Mont this year or similar.

fullsize
Maybe we should offer them as a service to soloists and pairs or something.

fullsize
Jim waiting for a lap start.

fullsize
Crash finishing a lap and getting the baton off.

fullsize
Start finish area sometime Sunday morning.

fullsize
A few people out racing on the course.

fullsize
Some competitor on one of the many sweet single track.

fullsize
The entrance to the bridge area.

fullsize
A bridge they erected two days before the race and intended to take down after the race.

fullsize
This bridge allowed the course to cross over itself which was rather neat, it was also fun to ride down.

fullsize
Jim comiing off the bridge on the final lap for our team in the race.

fullsize
Garret (who was riding on another team), Crash and Jim post race.

fullsize
After the race 8 of us returned to the accomodation for some light refreshments.

fullsize
On Monday Gaz from N-ZO took us to Taupo to show us some cool riding, this is on a track above Huka Falls.

fullsize
More Huka Falls, people Kayak over this from time to time, there is a hell of a lot of moving water there.

fullsize
Pretty colour too, rather fresh water I suspect.

fullsize
On Monday afternoon Gaz took us over to Kinloch for the KawaKawa bay ride, Jonno got a flat.

fullsize
A viewing point from the track out over lake Taupo.

fullsize
Gaz on some of the lovely beech style singletrack.

fullsize
Crash pulling up for a quick rest.

fullsize
One of the spectacular views from the track.

fullsize
Crash getting ready to take a few photos.

fullsize
Jonno kindly took a photo of the two of us, the camp site at KawaKawa bay is down at lake level between us.

fullsize
Jonno had one of two Santa Cruz Nomads we saw while on the trip (the other belonged to Rob Smail in Rotorua), Jim said they are a rare bike, Gaz is sorel tempted to sell off anything he can to own one, apparently a nice bike to ride.

fullsize
The view up to the rock behind Crash from two photos back from the campsite.

fullsize
On Heidi's theory that all photos should have cycling gear in them, this is from the campsite.

fullsize
The N-ZO offices/headquarters in Rotorua, Gaz has a disc rotor that is higher than Crash (over 6'2").

fullsize
The cool signposts at some of the tracks in the Redwoods park. Gunna Gotta is a newish track and one of the best I havce ever ridden, definitely a must ride in the park.

fullsize
They have some harder tracks too.

fullsize
Crash at the bottom of Gunna Gotta.

fullsize
Mike Metz and Gaz in The Tickle where there was a flood a while back.

fullsize
Crash.

fullsize
Mike Metz has a Turner Duallie that weighs 9.5 KG. Ti spokes and all.

fullsize
The view from the top of Hot Cross Buns.

fullsize
Toward town.

fullsize
And again.

fullsize
We actually had bikes up here too.

fullsize
The start of Be Rude Not To, some asshole has stolen the red sign so they had to put up a interim one.
