Googong Paddle Dec 5 2010 - 100% dam capacity

With Googong Dam at 100% full I was keen to head out and have a paddle there. It is a wonderful place to paddle any time, however I though it would be rather special. So I put the call out, in the end Aaron was keen to come along, so we grabbed Gary's surf ski and my multi sport boat and headed out on Sunday morning.

I had my gps on so have a trace from the 19.5 km we paddled. As you can see on that map, the maps photos were taken at a time the dam was uder 50% full, now with 100% there is a lot more water everywhere. The fact that we were able to paddle all the way to washpen crossing, and could have gone further if we felt like doing so was pretty cool. I highly recommend getting out there for a paddle to anyone keen on the sport.

Googong is spilling over the recently constructed spillway and it looks pretty damn impressive doing this.

fullsize
As we left after the paddle there were cars parked up and down this road with people out looking at it.

fullsize
It is a heck of a lot of water being released, as it flows into Burley Griffen there is also a lot coming out of Scrivner.

A shot of me checking out the dam wall.

Close up of the spill

fullsize
For anyone who knows the area of the foreshores carpark this will be interesting. This is at the top of the concrete ramp we normally walk down to put the boats in.

fullsize
We parked right next to the water here to unload boats.

fullsize
The water was close on both sides here as the dam is full. Really impressive to see it this full.

fullsize
This is close to where the registration desk normally is for the Googong challenge.

fullsize
Looking back to see water in the bay we normally have the boats down at the bottom of.

fullsize
Looking down from the carpark to see water next to the walking track.

fullsize
Incredible to see people sitting and fishing off this walking track that is normally so far above the water.

fullsize
Starting our paddle from the top of the boat ramp.

fullsize
Alas I was not used to Aaron's camera, the dial on it had twisted around and it took me a while to sort out how to take photos again. Here is Aaron as I sorted it out a bit.

fullsize
I put it in the plain photo taking mode, which later Aaron told me takes grainy photos, rather than the auto assist mode. We also ran into Gabrielle on the water.

fullsize
The rest of these photos are unfortunately a bit grainy. Shane (here) and another person from the bgcc club were also out paddling

fullsize
Hard to see them due to grainy photo and not being used to Aaron's camera.

fullsize
A shot of Aaron as he paddled up behind me.

fullsize
I wanted to get a photo of paddling through the tops of the trees.

fullsize
A lot of the time we actually were paddling over some well established trees if we were anywhere near the shore.

fullsize
There were a few other kayakers out on the water

fullsize
We said hi as we paddled past them.

fullsize
Beginning to get to the river area.

fullsize
Though the water was still fairly wide here, so much more water than normal.

Taking a photo from behind Aaron.

Aaron paddling ahead again

fullsize
We stopped at the seat at the end of the walking track that starts near London bridge below Washpen crossing.

fullsize
As good a place as any to stop surpringly high up the river.

fullsize
However we hopped back in and paddled a little bit further up as I wanted to paddle to Washpen crossing as this is where the second run leg in Googong comes.

fullsize
Rather amazing to see water lapping at the place we run past every year.

fullsize
So I posed at the crossing sign in paddling gear

Boats sitting behind us in the water.

This year at the Googong race I was cramping so much I was walking here anyway.
