Matilda the pink Mirage 730

For a year or two I have been admiring Andrew's double sea Kayak and Dave and Julie's double. Both of them are Mirage Doubles with Tangerine decks. As I have been enjoying paddling a lot recently I thought it may be fun to own such a toy. However after months of looking to see if anyone would sell one second hand (rare items on the second hand market) I eventually decided to buy one new. So I contacted Mirage and asked them to build me a Mirage 730, and as it was being built to spec I asked for my personally preference in deck colour.

Of course the new boat has to accessorise my Pink Bender Bicycles mountain bike nicely, thus I chose a pink deck. In the end it became a pink fade, which I must say looks pretty damn good.

As I named my surf ski "Floozy" I decided I should name my new boat also, thus trying to think of the name of something pink, I asked Andrew, who happens to enjoy the odd cartoon or two, what the name of the pink starfish character in Spongebob Squarepants is. However the name Patrick just was not working, no one used it, everyone told me I needed to give the boat a girls name. Finally after finishing the Hawkesbury Classic in it in 2007, our support crew suggested the name Matilda, I liked it, so I have had to choose that as the name for the boat.

I drove up to Gosford yesterday and picked it up from Mirage, then today I was able to take it out at lunch for the maiden voyage. Lots of fun, what a great new toy this is. Thanks to Amanda for joining me for the first paddle in the boat, I am sure there is going to be a lot more fun I can have in this boat in the coming years.

Looking forward from the back seat, Amanda was even kind enough to wear a shirt to match the boat for the first paddle.

Yes I really was there for the first paddle.
